Description

Bring home a piece of ancient majesty — this Coast Redwood bonsai magnet captures the timeless grandeur of one of nature's most iconic trees in miniature form.

The Story: The Coast Redwood is the tallest tree species in the world, with individuals reaching over 350 feet. Fossil records show that before the last ice age, these giants once thrived as far north as Washington and Oregon, where they flourished in the moist, temperate forests that stretched along the Pacific Coast. Today, they are primarily found in California due to climatic changes and logging practices. Despite their current limited range, Coast Redwoods remain a symbol of resilience and grandeur, with bonsai specimens showcasing their majestic forms. This tree began life as a nursery plant in 1957 and may be the oldest living example of a redwood cultivated as a bonsai anywhere in the world. In the late-1950s, California bonsai artist and nurseryman Toichi Domoto acquired two, three-year-old Coast Redwood seedlings. One he planted in the ground at his nursery near Oakland, CA, and the other, he selected to become a bonsai. When Toichi donated this Redwood to our collection in 1990, the bonsai was 36 inches tall while the Redwood seedling he planted in the ground had grown to over 80 feet tall!
