Description

The Story: Satsuki Azaleas have long fascinated Japanese gardeners and bonsai growers, as evidenced by the fact that there are over 1,000 named varieties of Satsuki. Kinsai is believed to be the oldest variety and one of the most favored, due to the intense scarlet color and unusual spidery shape of the flowers.  The powerful yet graceful trunk and perfectly positioned, well-ramified branches attest to the skill of the artists who developed this bonsai. The curator discovered this tree in the bazaar area of the 1997 Kokufu-ten bonsai exhibit at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and shortly thereafter acquired it from artist Isao Fukita.
