Description

Bring home a piece of ancient majesty — this azalea bonsai magnet captures the timeless grandeur of one of nature's most iconic trees in miniature form.

The Story: “Kirishima” azaleas are named for the area in southern Japan to which they are native. This particular variety is admired for the small, intensely colored magenta to lavender flowers, borne profusely in early spring. The foliage is an attraction in its own right, changing from the bright green of new growth to the deep, glossy green of summer, to a wine red in winter. The plant was estimated to be about 30 years old at the time of its purchase from an Oregon nursery. Initial styling took place in 1979 with the assistance of the late California bonsai master Khan Komai. Artist Leo Cunningham, past president of the American Bonsai Society, donated this beautiful, semi-cascade azalea to the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection in 1996.
